I finally had some time today to look and see what could be causing this, and it the problem was that the ipw2200 firmware wasn't in /lib/firmware/2.6.22-10-386 After doing a cp /lib/firmware/2.6.22-10-generic/ipw2200* /lib/firmware/2.6.22-10-386/, and then re-modprobe'ing ipw2200, the wireless came up just fine.
