Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu there is no way to see the virtual network interfaces which are
currently present in the system.
I have VMware installed and I have two virtual network interfaces apart from
"lo". It will be easier for any new user to find out the interfaces via gui
than trying to go for ifconfig. eg

ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr f0:5d:a8:9d:a5:86
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1
          RX packets:7695 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:7695 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:5666012 (5.6 MB) TX bytes:5666012 (5.6 MB)

vmnet1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:50:06:c0:00:01
          inet addr:192.168.81.1 Bcast:192.168.81.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr a0:ca:38:0f:5a:fe

          RX bytes:408438463 (408.4 MB) TX bytes:20152488 (20.1 MB)

There are 3 virtual network interfaces - lo, vmnet1, vmnet8. None of
them are visible from System Settings -> Network.

Since Ubuntu LTS 14.04 will be supported for the next 5 years, I think
it should be added as an improvement in the next point release.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
