If I suspend the laptop using the suspend menu entry or CRTL+ESC button first,
wake it up properly and after that close the lid, the hang doesn't happen. That
could explain why I thought I had found a workaround before. I must have
suspended the laptop using keyboard shortcuts and then the lid close worked
fine which led me to believe that I had found the solution to the problem. I
have tried many times the procedure before and I'm confident the behaviour is
persistent.
Suspend the laptop using suspend menu or keyboard shortcut first - lid close NO
freeze no matter how many times afterwards I suspend it and wake it up.
I reboot the laptop and close the lid - freeze occurs.
During these actions Xfce power manager is disabled.
