by 'no compiler activity' I mean that there was no 'cc1' or 'cc1plus'
entry showing in my instance of 'top' implying that no building was
going on. In addition apt was consuming 5% cpu for at least 5 minutes. I
assumed that this meant the build script was somehow hung, so I tried to
ctrl+c. The ctrl+c didn't return, so I killed.

In fact later the installation completed successfully when I gave it
time to finish. So I guess this is my fault, and nothing is actually
wrong like you suspect.
