Er, I've been just bitten by this "feature" too.

Having the habit of using /etc/init.d/*  (since it works on many
different platforms and my fingers learned it many years ago) I presumed
that would at some stage be replaced by the "service" command - but not
that networking would be started in some different way.

So I would also agree with comment #2 :-)
