I'm encountering the same problems with my Dell Inspiron 1525 and
Xubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) x86_64.  Most any display change (blanking,
add/removing external monitor) results in a non-fatal error:

Suspend/hibernate fails also.  Closing the lid results in a freeze.

The "encoder's hw state doesn't match sw tracking" seems to be the problem.  A 
fix for the same error was made last year:
