Let me know what else I can do to help with this. Additionally, Lewis, the workaround you put forth doesn't work for me. I don't have a radeon_bl0 entry in my /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/ folder. This may be because I'm using the fglrx driver and it looks like you're currently using the radeon driver.
