Hi! Finally I also upgraded to Kubuntu 14.04, and have also still the crackles. Since it is a very old Laptop, there are only USB 2.0 connectors, so for sure no USB-3.0 problem...
And: running on the same laptop daphile (which is a headless player based on Gentoo) works fine, without any problems. Wondering why it's fine with that one, but not Kubuntu... So, let's see if I can help anything...
