I think that most users used to do some actions, e.g.: clicking on the top 
right/bottom left to logout.
For me it's interesting to have redundancy but if something is different: the 
Applications Menu is different than the Unity dash, the Shortcuts applet has a 
completely different design than the Shortcuts applet of the Gnome Panel, etc.

Here I think the logout applet is mainly designed for the session
because it provides the same actions as the other ones and users used to
click on the other one. (According to the comments linked to the bug
#1242112 most users didn't know that they can use the logout applet of
the dock)
