Here are a few notes after some researches:

--- jeekajoo's way to debug:
$ scanimage -v > test1.jpg
$ scanimage -v > test2.jpg

is a good way because it produces the bug (so no need to have simplescan
hanging and force quitting it).

--- contrary to what I wrote earlier, Skanlite is also producing errors

--- I found a solution that I described at
