Same problem on Arch with kernel 3.14.4-1 and xf86-input-synaptics
1.8.0-1. Xorg log reports "finger width range 0-15" but hw->fingerWidth
is always 0.

I'm a little confused about where the problem lies. Is this something to
be fixed in the synaptics driver or elsewhere?
