Tried it with 3.15.1-utopic too (Linux alex-laptop 3.15.1-031501-generic #201406161841 SMP Mon Jun 16 22:42:50 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux)
The whole system froze again, just before my eyes. This time the file-system was corrupted too and I had to run fsck after reboot. Going back to ubuntu default kernel.
