ok, so just to follow up, I went to software & updates and switched the
selection from

Using X.org Xserver -Nouveau display driver ...
 to 
Using NVIDIA binary driver -version 331.38 from nvidia-331(proprietary tested)

and restarted. The load-up screen is a little different (not quite as
'sexy' :), but I'm ok with that) and now I'm able to suspend and wake-up
without a problem.

The lock ->unlock functionality was fine for either driver.
So, anyway, my problem is fixed, but if you want me to do any further testing 
with the original open-source driver, let me know.
