ruediger, did this problem not occur in a release prior to Trusty?

** Tags added: latest-bios-1.29

** Description changed:

I sent the laptop to standby using the menu. Coming back from standby, I
see a black screen with backlight on, and cannot do anything. Shutting
down the system using the power button works however from this state
(interestingly, xubuntu screen with waiting animation comes up).

- "sudo pm-suspend" works fine, though.
-
- Xubuntu 14.04, i386 kernel, Pentium M ULV 733, Intel i855 graphics, 2GB
- RAM (Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook P7010)
+ WORKAROUND: sudo pm-suspend
