This problem has repeatedly appeared on my machine (14.04) over the last few weeks.
When it happens, I delete the file "/var/lib/apt/lists/za.archive.ubuntu .com_ubuntu_dists_trusty-updates_universe_i18n_Translation-en", run "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" and it goes away.
