I think the problem with installing apport-retrace was that one needed
to specify apt-get install gdb apport-retrace - to force the removal of
gdb-minimal.

You can also just give out the .crash file, but first do apport-cli
/var/crash/thecrash-file, and select first View (it processes for some
time, answer yes if it asks whether to continue regardless of the
Android files) and then Keep to update the crash file a bit.
