Thank you David. Your patch worked for me too. My own patches posted on 2007-07-07 and 2007-07-08 don't work. I'm still trying to make them work.
Unfortunately ubuntu update notifier constantly suggests to replace the patched version with a more recent version because I applied the patch to version 0.5.8.1 of hal.
