Oh dear, nothing learned from doing :-( My system can still be accessed by SSH, but screen schows nothing but "could not write bytes, broken pipe".
I did: sudo apt-get install libglapi-mesa which removed a lot of stuff, and added a lot of trusty stuff. Also removed was xinit (?) and "google-earth-stable 6.0.3.2197-r0". Since now 2 out of 2 people had trouble with google-earth, I am wondering if this has anything to do with it? I then testet "hwe-support-status --verbose" and it told me that my HWE is supported until 2017. This was done BEFORE sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-trusty xserver-xorg-lts-trusty was executed, so as far as I understand I could not possibly have a working system, yet this was supported for two more years??? Then the above command was also executed, and I rebooted. Strange thing - it worked, but only 2 out of 3 times - the third time it would just show a black screen. Done at least 10 times! I then autoremoved some 206 *:386 packages, and reinstalled google-earth (which reinstalled some 213 *:386 packages). But from then on, I never could go onto the desktop. Booting into recovery mode still worked, but best I ever got was a terminal login, but in the end only the broken- pipe message was shown. Removing google-earth via SSH did not improve the situation. I noticed that /etc/X11/X (as a symlink to /usr/bin/xorg) does not exist. Is that normal for trusty? Fortunately, I did all this on a copy of my hard disk, and could go back to my out-of-support going HWE stack. And will stay there until a real solution is up! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1340613 Title: HWE upgrade not working in 12.04 due to missing packages To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1340613/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
