I don't have much time to contribute to this ticket, but I'd like to mention that I''ve been using 14.04 for quite some time and this problem seems to have been introduced fairly recently. I first noticed it on Friday 19th Sept 2014. Other than some updated packages, the only change to my system here is the connection of an XBOX-360 controller, which I purchased and connected on that same day, Friday 19th Sept 2014. My workaround is to use a wired USB mouse instead of the wireless Logitech mouse.
