In BootMesg.txt you can see very clearly the two related messages, it detects 
both monitors and then somehow forgets about it. 
Before Logging in (both monitor recognized in log in screen), Terminal 1 shows:

$ xrandr
can't open display

After the odd workaround (plug out/in of VGA adapter), Terminal now in GUI 
shows:
