Thought I was reporting upstream ;-) as I'm just a way out of date 10.10 'pure' DM user leapfrogging the single task centric GNOME2/Unity 'touchyscreen' nonsense to the new Ubuntu Mate 14.10.
So I'm new to all this, but it looks as if Debian is correct: https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=meld Eg. Stable is 1.6.1-1, Unstable is 1.8.6-1 and only Experimental is 3.11.4-1. <-- Note 3.11.4 not 3.11.3. I think I know the answer to your post here: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-sponsors/2014-August/038271.html For others finding this thread in the future a workaround is to download 1.8.6 from http://meldmerge.org/ and follow the included instructions to run meld without installing. Extract into a local folder, and create a new Main Menu entry. In Launcher Properties browse to {your_local_folder}/bin/meld. By not installing you should not affect any future patches/fixes to the Ubuntu repository version.
