I just tested your kernel from post in #12 using virtual machine in
virtual box so I could take snapshots before and after. With your kernel
my cifs mount in /etc/fstab works fine. Without your kernel i get the
same failure as above with this message:

CIFS VFS: Error connecting to socket. Aborting operation.
CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -5

Also did touch,write,read and delete test on new file in the mounted
(remote) cifs directory. Works great!
