I think the problem might be in the testdrive-common package in the /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/testdrive/virt/kvm.py file where this calls kvm-img when qemu-img is the command to create a disk image. I am having trouble testing if this chage works getting testdrive to load the new libraries so if someone could test this or see if this is what is causing it would be nice.
