Same problem here with Dell XPS 12 9Q33 and Ubuntu 14.04 unity.
Cheese initiates but closes with the following message:

I've installed guvcview and it works partially on it (get some
horizontal error lines on the video). But still does not work on any
other place.
Any ideas?
