Binary package hint: compiz
I had 6 workspace with metacity. After enabling desktop effects, I got
4 workspaces (on a cube).
Tested by switching from metacity to compiz
(1:0.5.2+git20070829-0ubuntu1) after doing 'gconftool --recursive-unset
/apps/compiz'.
