While using Kubuntu 14.10 sometimes the screen blacks out for a few
seconds and then comes back to life, but often with highly reduced
resolution. The resolution of the screen actually seems to be fine (as
evident by taking a screenshot) but things seem to get rendered on a
much too small buffer and then streched to fit the screen (terrible
upscaling?). Sorry I'm having a hard time explaining it, but see the
attached screenshot.

This actually happened multiple times. One time it logged me out of KDE,
another time KDE stayed active but the resolution was reduced (or
whatever this is)

Attached is the output of dmesg, the relevant error seems to start here:
[12105.193052] radeon 0000:01:00.0: ring 0 stalled for more than 10140msec
[12105.193058] radeon 0000:01:00.0: GPU lockup (waiting for 0x00000000000dec08
last fence id 0x00000000000dec03 on ring 0)
[12105.674184] radeon 0000:01:00.0: Saved 592 dwords of commands on ring 0.
[12105.674320] radeon 0000:01:00.0: GPU softreset: 0x0000006C
