Thanks Edouard, Yes, I can confirm that appending the "showpage" command to my eps files causes them to be rendered correctly by evince and libspectre. From what I can tell reading the latest EPS standard (https://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/en/ps/5002.EPSF_Spec.pdf), as you say, showpage is allowed in eps, but should be redefined by programs that import eps. evince libspectre should do so in order to display correctly formatted eps files that lack the superfluous showpage command.
