Can you be more specific than "everything was slower"?  My experience is
that Compiz, at least, runs noticeably smoother under Xgl than plain
Xorg.  While Xgl will have an impact on OpenGL performance, it shouldn't
be too much for real-world performance.  glxgears is a poor test, as the
main bottleneck is putting stuff on the screen, rather than rendering
what goes on the screen.

Aside from wine, which interacts badly with Xgl, 3d programs should not
perform substantially worse, and general 2D performance should be
essentially unaffected.
