Thanks Pavel! Not sure if I did this correctly. I could not find lines
in my 50-default.conf that were exactly the same as what you posted
above, so I just copied and pasted your example above into my conf file
instead. Hope that was ok.

When I restarted network-manager the applet went away and came back
correctly. When I tried to connect to the VPN nothing happened. The
debug log is completely empty. I tried restarting and connecting a
second time, again nothing and the log remains empty (literally 0
bytes).

Did I look in the right place? Is /var/log/debug the correct place to
look for the file?

The feeling I get when I click on the VPN link in my applet submenu is
that the click is not registering on the system. Something like an empty
a href link tag in an html page. The link simply doesn't respond when it
is clicked on.

As I mentioned previously, VPN connects fine when I do it from the
terminal, so I wonder if there is something wrong or missing in the
applet's VPN submenu.
