This is because the USB microphone/hub/webcam imbedded in the monitors is one of the available devices to control using the mixer plugin. As soon as they are detached, it is the same issue as in bug 4962 - the CPU load goes up immensely, as though the plugin is trying to check or configure the microphones that were powered off.
