hi gahrb! I am also a Forerunner owner and had problems now and then. Your problem could be caused by the fact that Ubuntu loads the driver "garmin_gps" when a Forerunner is plugged in. This is fine for software that uses it. But the garmin-forerunner-tools or gpsbabel have own routines to access a GPS and are blocked by the driver.
