I'm not sure this is just UEFI. I'm thought I tried legacy mode too... The only thing that worked was physically removing the primary drive so that the second was named /dev/sda. Then ubiquity completed without crashing.
Also confirmed in UEFI mode for trusty, utopic and vivid.
