Hi, Thinking about this, I bet a restart is necessary, or at least a restart of lightdm. I will update the Wiki to reflect this. The restart is necessary to get the correct lightdm binary to run so it knows about the unity8-lxc session. I've been running this lightdm for so long now that it didn't occur to me that it needs to be restarted. The unity8-lxc package itself doesn't require a restart though.
Regarding the logout, yes this is annoying and a known issue in Unity 8.
