@Chris: With the 3.18 kernels, the "suspending takes almost a minute" issue disappeared. This means that after invoking pm-suspend, the computer is actually sleeping within a second or two.
The issue of "waking up while lid is closed" is still the same. You only see it happen earlier now and don't have to wait for a minute to test it.
