Public bug reported:

the xscreensaver package installs a .desktop file for each screensaver
under /usr/share/applications/xscreensaver. In GNOME 3 these all show up
in the applications overlay in the "Activities" screen. Is there a good
reason for all of the .desktop files? Can they be places in a default
location such that they don't show up as GNOME 3 Apps? Not sure what the
behaviour is in Unity, but I'd guess it's the same. This is bad
behaviour for the GUI dependent user -- i.e. me -- who may not connect a
recent install with a new flood of iconless apps that will then quietly
run in the background if clicked.

So, to summarise:

What I'm trying to achieve: modify installation of xscreensaver package
such that .desktop files either don't exist or install in a location
where GNOME (and other desktop environments) wont pick them up.

Steps I took: installed xscreensaver package under Ubuntu 14.10 with
GNOME 3.12

What I would like to have happen: Allow install without the apps
appearing in GNOME Activities Apps overlay.

Thanks much and I'm willing to help as much as I can.
