Boot with gutsy tribe 5 in cd drive of IBM t60p laptop. Open Sound
Preferences. Press "Test" button next to "sound playback". Hear an
extremely faint tone, no matter how loud you set the volume control.
Select "Sounds" tab. Press "play" button next to "log out" or "log in".
Total silence.
