As usual there has been 'progress' on my side. I lost my primary SSD and
had to reinstall. The problem went away with that. I'm still convinced
that the problem is with unity getting stuck, not the graphics driver.

Just try something: Create a subdirectory in your home directory and
move everything (including all hidden files/directories) into it. Then
log back in and it will work again. You can then move stuff back in
place, only do it for know files/directories. You'll loose some
gnome/uniti customization, but that's all.
