I had the same problem with edgy and fiesty. The problem seems to be fixed in Gutsy but I dont recommend installing Gutsy yet. In edgy and fiesty I had to recompile the alsa driver to get it to work. Apparently a newer version of the Alsa driver is better with the HDA soundcard that these laptops have. There's a tutorial on Ubuntu forums telling how to recomplie and install the later newer version of alsa.
