Silly me. If the backend does not provide a proper "HTTP/1.1 blah" response line, Apache must assume that it's a HTTP 0.9 response. The result is the same as if BroxyBadHeader had been set to StartBody. Hence, Apache is doing the right thing. Go figure. :)
