my raid5 under windows xp is really instable, so i have to do a (really slow) complete rebuild around twice a month. so i truly don't expect an improved situation if the whole thing runs under linux. as a workaround i installed ubuntu under vmware, it worked pretty well and performance wasn't too bad. for now i'm going back to raid1 ... sorry and good luck.
