I had same problem. Starting shotwell from command line and see: ... L 2235 2014-12-25 13:19:03 [WRN] Debug.vala:95: Unable to open or create log file /home/serge/.cache/shotwell/shotwell.log ... Indeed, the directory ".cache/shotwell" had restricted to read-write for owner. Changed it to "normal" state, it works for me.
