OK, managed to do this...

Though I do not think it was the kernel that fixed it.  I ended up with
problems getting the PC to boot and ended up reviewing the GRUB
commands.  I found "acpi=off" and "nomodeset" multiple times...  I
removed all references to these and it started to work, boot and
shutdown.

Hope this ius useful to someone/future users.  Sorry for the delay
getting back
