I spoke too soon.

During untangling my desktop after pressing Super-S, I noticed:
  - Some fullscreen evince windows don't want to be moved to another desktop,
they always pop back to desktop 0. It seems they have lost their
close/minimize/
    maximize icons, too.
  - Moving windows after Super-S is slower than usual, and sometimes complety
blocks, so I have to press Super-S twice to continue.
So I gave up and logged out, and can online recommend "unity --replace" and
"compiz --replace" to recover critical applications that had been left open.
