Ok so I think the issue here is that the device in ESXi is not properly blacklisted. Taking the patch from: https://lkml.org/lkml/2014/10/17/442
Blacklists multiple devices and should be the better solution than my original patch. I've created some test builds against 3.16 and 3.13, if those affected by this issue could test them on their affected systems then I can reply to the original thread and try to get this applied upstream and in the Ubuntu kernels.
