this is just a reminder that the problem is still present with the
latest ubuntu kernel 3.16.0-29-generic.

bisecting is not completely obvious to me, so I didn't have the time to look 
into it yet.
I just tested the precompiled kernels available in 
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/trusty/+source/linux
and noticed that the problem started to happen strictly after 3.13.0-16.36
