I have changed the "Selection" render mode to "OpenGL Occlusion Queries" under 
User preferences -> System tab. 
Default is Auto. Now the viewport selection is fast.

System: 
-Ubuntu 14.04.1 64bit 3.13.0-41-generic,
-Intel HD4600 (i5 4460),
-GTX 750Ti.
