Public bug reported: In Ubuntu 14.04, behavior of PHP's htmlspecialchars() has changed. This results in pretty bad behavior with squirrelmail. Rendering of non-utf8 and non-iso-8859-1 messages fails in a way that message is not visible and/or Subject and/or From fields are also not visible.
