What have I done? thinkpad-keys is back! : )

All the keys now work after a reboot but it is worth noting that most of
the keys I tested started working after thinkpad_acpi was manually
loaded previously.

The one thing that doesn't seem to quite work is the gnome-power-manager
brightness popup and the g-p-m brightness applet. I believe that prior
to the update having the thinkpad_acpi module manually loaded allowed
the brightness applet (with its draggable slider) would change the
screen brightness. This is no longer the case. Additionally the popup
that appears when you use the brightness keys also seems to struggle.
Despite the screen brightness actually changing, the popup is unable to
tell you what "level" you are currently at (as you ramp the brightness
up the popup will toggle between the empty and one "bar" full).
