I have found the triggering condition on my box: I have set the next
text entry source shortcut key (System Settings -> Text Entry) to "Shift
+ Shift R", i.e., pressing both shifts together. If I remove this
shortcut, then the problem disappears.

Moreover, this issue affects gedit's find input entry (pressing
shift+anything closes the find entry immediately, effectively making
search unusable), and also web browser input sometimes: for example, I
could not rename a Google Sheets document's sheet with uppercase
letters, as the in-place edit entry for renaming closed immediately if I
tried pressing Shift+anything. Using Firefox 35.0.1.

I do not know where to report this exactly; I accept any suggestions...
