Thanks Erik, i grabbed the source for the package (and dependencies including libsmbios, compiled and installed the deb, added the module dcdbas to /etc/modules and it worked fine (on a dell d620). Looks like the debs in gutsy still aren't built with dell-backlight support correctly - they don't contain the following files /usr/lib/hal/hald-addon-dell-backlight /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-dell-laptop-brightness.fdi.
